FAQ

Is Osteopathy Safe?

There are potential complications with any therapy and your osteopath will discuss any concerns pertinent to you and your complaint. Most techniques are quite gentle and pleasant, although occasionally a stronger technique may be used. If you have concerns you should discuss these with your osteopath.

Osteopaths pay very low insurance premiums. This is a very good indication of the safety of their treatment.

How is Osteopathy different?

Osteopaths typically spend between 30-45 minutes with patients, carefully reviewing all aspects of the complaint. Very few external therapeutics are used, for example ultra-sound, heatpacks and TENS machines, and our osteopaths do not pop in and out of the room between other patients.
Some of the techniques we use are similar to those used by chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists but most are unique to osteopaths. It is the way that osteopaths combine their knowledge of anatomy , physiology and extensive general medical training that is the most beneficial.
This is what makes the biggest difference. We think about what a body needs to be able to repair and heal itself and then treat accordingly to remove those barriers.

Do I need a referral?

No, you do not need your GP to refer you to an Osteopath, unless your treatment is regarding a Workcover, Comcare, DVA, third party insurance claim or you are eligible to claim through Medicare (Enanced Primary Care) .

Modern Osteopathy supports best practice in all fields of medicine, and we will happily refer you to your GP or specialist for further investigations, scans, medications and surgery. Osteopaths can refer you for X-rays of the spine if deemed necessary.

How many sessions will I need?

This is a very common question and a very difficult one to answer without first knowing a thorough history of your health complaint, your age, your occupation, whether you smoke, your exercise levels and many other factors. Most problems are resolved in approximately three to four treatments but other problems which you may have had for many years, or if the body has experienced great trauma, are likely to require five or more treatments, and possibly on-going maintenance program to maintain good health.

You will be given a good indication of how many treatments you will requireon your first visit. We do not endorse a dependency on lengthy and costly treatment plans. We believe if you are willing to follow prescribed exercises and take responsibility for your own recovery then this will significantly reduce the need for excess treatments.
