Massage and Osteopathy

It is common for massage therapists to work together with osteopaths for the purpose of achieving optimum results with musculoskeletal health problems.

Often as a result of tight muscles it may be difficult for an osteopath to achieve satisfactory results for a patient without some preliminary soft tissue work being performed.

Regular massage may be beneficial as ongoing therapy both to maintain the results of osteopathy and also to possibly reduce the need for excessive follow up treatments.

The benefits of massage include decreasing muscular tension, regulation of the nervous system, decreasing mental stress, increasing blood flow and providing pain relief. The release of endorphins and serotonin can: prevent fibrosis or scar tissue, increase the flow of lymph, and improve sleep.

The aim of remedial massage is to restore or promote motion and to reduce or prevent pain using a range of techniques.

Triggerpoint Therapy: A trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot in a muscle which is painful on compression and can give referred pain, decrease muscle flexibility or produce muscle weakness.

Myofascial Release: Refers to specialised massage techniques which are usually performed with sustained tensional force to increase the pliability and length of a muscle.

Neuromuscular Technique: Refer to a broad range of techniques which positively affect the tone of a muscle.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage: A specialised treatment technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to remove congestion and assists in promoting optimum lymphatic function.

Sports Massage: The use of therapeutic techniques to promote the health and well-being of an athlete.

Hot Stone Massage: Hot stones are used as tools to deliver effective soft tissue manipulation. The heat of the massage stones warms the skin,  preparing the soft tissues of the body so the massage therapist can work into the deeper muscle layers. The benefits include increased local circulation, improved blood flow to surrounding tissues, and greater ability to transport toxins and waste products from the area.
