Osteopathy
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is an extremely safe manual medicine which aims to restore and then maintain the normal balance between all the systems composing the body in order to sustain optimal health.
Osteopaths use a variety of techniques including soft tissue massage, stretching, joint mobilization and manipulation to treat a wide range of musculo-skeletal and functional disorders.
By focusing treatment on the body as a unified functioning unit, treatment aims to improve (but is not limited to) blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, joint range of movement and to alleviate disruptive influences on the nervous system. In other words, Osteopaths consider every system that make up the human body when treating, in order to promote healing and good health.
How is Osteopathy Different?
Osteopaths typically spend between 30-45 minutes with patients, carefully reviewing all aspects of the complaint. Very few external therapeutics are used, for example ultra-sound, heat packs and TENS machines, and our osteopaths do not pop in and out of the room between other patients.
Some of the techniques we use are similar to those used by chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists but most are unique to osteopaths. It is the way that osteopaths combine their knowledge of anatomy , physiology and extensive general medical training that is the most beneficial. This is what makes the biggest difference. We think about what a body needs to be able to repair and heal itself and then treat accordingly to remove those barriers.
